History of the Petoskey Stone:
The Petoskey Stone is Michigan’s State Stone. It is a fossilized coral called Hexagonaria Percarinata that lived during the Devonian period (over 350 million years ago!!!) During that time, Michigan as we know it, was actually located close to the equator and was a warm, shallow, tropical reef; a perfect habitat for numerous types of corals, such as the Hexagonaria, to thrive. During the next million years, movement of the Earth’s plates caused that land to be pushed up into the North as it is now. Glaciers then scraped along the Earth and deposited the fossils all throughout Michigan’s Northern Lower Peninsula.
